Madeira Sights

Sea Pools

Updated 11/14/2013

Fodor's Review

Though not a beach per se, the otherworldly natural sea pools in Porto Moniz are one of the most popular sites along the coast in Madeira, with children and adults splashing in the waters around the volcanic rocks or lying on the concrete "beach," soaking up some sun. There are pools of varying sizes, some shallow and calm—perfect for kids—and some deeper with more waves for the adventurous (one of these has a diving board that takes you right into the sea). You can

rent deck chairs and umbrellas for the day (but bring your own towel), and a snack bar on-site serves tasty Portuguese specialties. Amenities: food and drink; lifeguards; showers; toilets. Best for: swimming.
