Fodor's Review:

Lisbon's main botanical garden was first laid out in 1874. Hidden between backstreets about 2 km (1 mi) north of the Bairro Alto, it makes a restful stop, with 10 acres of paths, benches, and nearly 15,000 species of subtropical plants; there's also a 19th-century meteorological observatory.

  • Cost: Gardens EUR 1, observatory free
  • Open: Gardens May-Oct., weekdays 9-8, weekends 10-8; Nov.-Apr., weekdays 9-6, weekends 10-6; guided tours (reservations required) year-round Sat. at 11. Museum weekdays 10-5
