Built in 1902 by Raul Mésnier, who studied under Eiffel, the Santa Justa Elevator, inside a Gothic-style tower, is one of Lisbon's more extraordinary structures. After stepping outside the elevator compartment at the upper level, you can either take the walkway leading to the Largo do Carmo, or climb the staircase to the very top of the structure for views of the Baixa district and beyond. There's a windswept café up here, at an elevation of 147½ feet, though its prices, like its location, are sky high.
