Fodor's Review:

Established as a café in 1784, and the oldest restaurant in the city, today Tavares Rico pleases its customers with a handsome Edwardian dining room; outstanding service; superb, French-inspired fare; and an excellent wine list. Caviar pushes the price of a meal right up, but there's nothing wrong with lowering your sights—the sole cooked in champagne sauce is a classic, and there are game birds available in season, served roasted in a rich wine sauce. Cravings for Portuguese food can be assuaged by the bacalhau or the sopa alentejana (Alentejo-style soup that's a concoction of garlic, bread, and egg).

I and a friend had dinner here very recently. The dining room is spectacular, with modern touches. The service was elegant, cold, and the slowest I have ever experienced in a famous restaurant; and it was unco-ordinated. A 3-course dinner lasted over three and a half hours, and it took 35 minutes to get the bill (3 requests). We were surrounded by angry or very impatient diners! No no-one came to offer a cockatil (we wanted a glass of champagne), and it took over half an hour to get a menu. The food was, like the service, elegant, nouvelle cuisine. Portions were tiny, and my starter of pig's head and langoustines arrived, topped with beautiful froth, but stone cold. The restaurant was not full, but when I tackled them on leaving about the poor service they said there was a problem as all the diners had arrived at the same time. Not true, and such an excuse hardly justifies the time taken to provide the bill. To add insult to injury my umbrella was stolen! Please remove the star!
