Built of pink granite and marble, the modern Belém Cultural Center won few friends when it was constructed in 1991, although all of Lisbon appreciates its cultural offerings. The center, formerly the home of the Museu do Design, has a restaurant, a café, and a concert hall. Its roof gardens and terrace bar have fine views of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Rio Tejo.
