In the gardens outside the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, sculptures hide in every recess. You may want to spend a little time here before following signs to the Modern Art Center—the 20th-century art collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with its two floors of contemporary and modern works, the finest collection of its sort in Portugal. Naturally, Portuguese artists are best represented: look for pieces by Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso, whose painting style varied greatly in his short life; abstract works by Viera da Silva; and the childhood themes explored in the paintings of Paula Rego. There's also a special section set aside for drawings and prints.
