The Chiado's principal street is lined with old stores and turn-of-the-20th-century, wood-paneled coffee shops. The most famous of the cafés is Café A Brasileira (Rua Garrett 120, Chiado. 21/346-9541), which has a life-size statue of Portugal's national poet, Fernando Pessoa, seated at an outside table.
