Fodor's Review:

Built in the late 17th century, the Palace of the Marquises, often called the Palácio Fronteira, remains one of the capital's most beautiful houses, containing splendid reception rooms with 17th- and 18th-century tiles, contemporary furniture, and paintings. Note that visits may be limited to guided tours; phone ahead for information. The grounds harbor a terraced walk, a topiary garden, and statuary and fountains. Some of the city's finest azulejos adorn the fountains and terraces and depict hunting scenes, battles, and religious themes.

  • Cost: Palace EUR 7.50; gardens weekdays EUR 3, Sat. EUR 2.50
  • Open: July-Sept., Mon.-Sat. for guided tours (must be booked in advance for groups only) at 10:30, 11, 11:30, and noon; Oct.-May, Mon.-Sat. 11 AM and noon
