The small town of Montemor-o-Velho is most notable for its impressive ruined castle which sits high on a mound, overlooking the surrounding huddle of houses backed by agricultural plains. Within the walls lie the ruins of a palace, a recently restored church, sweeping lawns, and a pleasant café. On the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, a lively market takes place in town.
