Trollstigveien

Trollstigveien Review

Trollstigveien, Norway's most popular tourist road, starts in Åndalsnes. The road took 100 men 20 summers (1916-36) to build, in a constant struggle against the forces of rock and water. Often described as a masterpiece of construction, the road snakes its way through 11 hairpin bends up the mountain to the peaks named Bispen (the Bishop), Kongen (the King), and Dronningen (the Queen), which are 2,800 feet above sea level. The roads Trollstigveien and Ørneveien (at the Geiranger end) zigzag over the mountains separating two fjords. Roads are open only in summer. Halfway up, the road crosses a bridge over the waterfall Stigfossen (Path Falls), which has a vertical fall of nearly 600 feet. Walk to the lookout point, Stigrøra, by taking the 15-minute return path to the plateau. Signs show the way.
