Taxis are radio dispatched from a central office, and it can take up to 30 minutes to get one during peak hours. Cabs can be ordered from 20 minutes to 24 hours in advance. (If you leave a cab waiting after you've sent for one, there is an additional fee added to your fare.) Special transport, including vans and cabs equipped for people with disabilities, can be ordered. Taxi stands are located all over town, usually near Narvesen newsstands and kiosks. In the center, there are taxi stands at Stortinget in Karl Johans Gate, at Stortorget by the cathedral, at Youngstorget, and at Oslo Central Station. If there are no available taxis after midnight, take a night bus leaving from outside Oslo S Station.
It is possible to hail a cab on the street, but cabs are not allowed to pick up passengers within 100 yards of a stand. It is not unheard of to wait for more than an hour at a taxi stand in the wee hours of the morning, after everyone has left the bars. Never take pirate taxis; all registered taxis should have their roof lights on when they're available. Rates start at NKr 30 for hailed or rank cabs, and NKr 49 for ordered taxis, depending on the time of day.
