Tours In & Around Oslo

Tickets for all tours are available at both Oslo tourist offices (24-14-77-00), in Oslo S Station and in Sentrum. All tours, except HMK's Oslo Highlights tour, operate in summer only.

Starting at noon and continuing at 45-minute intervals until 10 PM, the Oslo Train, which looks like a chain of dune buggies, leaves Aker Brygge for a 30-minute ride around the town center. The train runs daily in summer. Contact a tourist center for departure times.

Boat Tours

Taking a boat tour in and around the Oslo fjords is a memorable way to see the capital. Cruise-Båtene (Rosenkrantz gt. 22, Sentrum. 22-42-36-98) organizes fjord excursions for all occasions on modern luxury or older restored vessels. The Norway Yacht Charter (Rådhusbrygge 3, Sentrum. 23-35-68-90) arranges lunch or evening tours or dinner cruises for anywhere from 12 to 600 passengers. Viking Cruise (Skogfaret 20 B, Ullern. 22-73-31-21) offers chartered tours on sailing yachts or replica Viking ships that serve traditional viking fare.

Bus Tours

Båtservice Sightseeing (Rådhusbryggen 3, Sentrum. 23-35-68-90) has a bus tour, five cruises, and one combination tour. Tickets for bus tours can be purchased on the buses. HMK Sightseeing (Hegdehaugsvn. 4, Majorstuen. 23-15-73-00) offers several bus tours in and around Oslo. Tours leave from the Tourist Information Center at Vestbanen; combination boat-bus tours depart from Rådhusbrygge 3, the wharf in front of City Hall.

Helicopter Tours

For a bird's-eye view of Oslo, take a helicopter tour with Pegasus (Gardermoen Vest. 64-81-92-00).

Private Guides

Guideservice (Akershusstranda 35, Sentrum. 22-42-70-20) caters to large groups in and around Oslo, and prices start at NKr 1,150 for a two-hour tour. Oslo Guidebureau (Nedre Slottsgt. 13, Sentrum. 22-42-28-18) specializes in guiding VIP clients and business delegations, and prices start at NKr 1,050 for two hours. OsloTaxi (02323) gives private car tours from NKr 250 per hour.

Special-Interest Tours

For an exhilarating experience, tour the forests surrounding Oslo (the marka) by dogsled. Both lunch and evening winter tours are available through Norske Sledehundturer (Einar Kristen Aas, 1514, Moss. 69-27-56-40. 69-27-37-86). The tourist information center can arrange four- to eight-hour motor safaris through the marka, and in winter Vangen Skistue (Laila and Jon Hamre, Fjell, 1404, Siggerud. 64-86-54-81) can arrange an old-fashioned sleigh ride (in summer, they switch to carriages).

Walking Tours

Organized walking tours are available through Oslo City and Nature Walks (Elgefaret 70B, 1362, Hosle. 41-31-87-40. www.oslowalks.no). Authorized city guides with acting experience lead you on themed walks, including a ghost walk through the old Kvadraturen area, exploring the creepier parts of Oslo's history. Contact Oslo Byantikvar (23-46-02-50), at the Antiquities Department of Oslo, for information on guided tours of Gamlebyen.
