Longyearbyen, Svalbard Sights

Spitsbergen Airship Museum

Updated 12/05/2012

Fodor's Review

This museum, right behind the university, presents the history of three airships that tried to reach the North Pole, all starting from Svalbard—America in 1906–09, Norge in 1926, and Italia in 1928—as well as the search and rescue expeditions that caused Roald Amundsen and others to lose their lives. Exhibits include photos, documents, film, and different models of landscape, ships, airplanes and airships. The museum shop sells books, plane models,

magazines, airship-related jewelry, and other related material.
