Bergstadens Ziir (Røros Church)

Bergstadens Ziir (Røros Church) Review

The Bergstadens Ziir towers over the wooden houses of the town. The eight-sided stone structure dates from 1784. On the tower you can see the symbol of the mines. Called "the mountain's cathedral," it can seat 1,600, quite surprising in a town with a population of only about 3,500. The pulpit looms above the center of the altar, and seats encircle the top perimeter. At press time, the church was undergoing renovations and not due to open to the public until summer of 2010. If you're visiting before then, you can still arrange guided tours with the tourist office.
