Bergen is a university town, and the many thousand students who live and study here all year round contribute to making the city's nightlife much more exciting than you might expect for a town of its size. Most nightspots center around Ole Bulls plass, the plaza at one end of Torgallmenningen. Within a stone's throw of the plaza you can find dozens of relaxing bars, lively pubs, dancing, live music, and trendy cafés.
For a quiet glass of wine in an intimate and historic setting, try award-winning Altona and its 400-year-old wine cellar. The vaulted ceilings and exposed brick add a lot of atmosphere. The food is good, too.
With Y-shape beams holding the ceiling aloft, this intimate cocktail bar is located in one of the crooked old buildings on the wharf.
This is the place for fun and games---shuffleboard, Ping-Pong, and pinball are among those on offer at the laid-back Bar 3. There's also an interesting selection of beers and lots of space for you and your friends to spread out.

The only gay bar in Bergen, Fincken packs a lot into a compact space: a friendly bar on the ground level, a dance floor and performance space up the spiral staircase, and even a pleasant patio in the back.

With a clubby atmosphere, JADA Roofgarden lets you sink into a leather armchair and enjoy a glass of beer or wine. But the big draw is the huge rooftop terrace, open throughout the year on the top floor of a shopping center.
With two stylish bars inside and a rooftop terrace with views of the fjord, Kava attracts a young and hip crowd. The place is known for its fishbowl-size drinks with enough straws for everyone in your group to share.
In the basement of the Hotel Norge by Scandic, this surprisingly sophisticated club is the location of hundreds of selfies every week. The cocktails are some of the most creative in town, and the dance floor is illuminated by a futuristic light show. DJs play at ear-splitting decibels, which is just right for the young crowd.
The name is something of an in-joke: this artisan cocktail bar is located in the former location of a clothing shop called Stress. It has a nostalgic and homey interior, blending furnishings from the '60s, '70s, and '80s.
The downstairs brasserie has plenty of aficionados, but for our money, the upstairs bar is the place to be. The heated terrace is great no matter what time of year, and the views are stellar. This is the perfect place for a drink before a show at the adjacent Ole Bull Theater.
