Stadhuis Atrium (Town Hall)

Stadhuis Atrium (Town Hall) Review

Richard Meier's Neo-Modernist 1995 complex, comprising the Town Hall, Central Library, and Municipal Record Office, is an awe-inspiring creation in aluminum, glass, and white epoxy resin. Take the elevator to the 11th floor (weekdays only) to get the full effect of the building's light and space. The architect's attention to mathematical relationships—every aspect of the design is based on measurements that are multiples of 17.73 inches—makes for mesmerizing effect. Meier has endeavored to show the building, both literally and metaphorically, in its best light—the quality of light in the vast central lobby belies the fact you are actually indoors.
