Waterland Neeltje Jans

Waterland Neeltje Jans Review

If you want to see the dike to end all dikes, drive South along the coast to see the Delta works and visit Waterland Neeltje Jans. This impressive museum offers a firsthand tour of the most important achievement of Dutch hydraulic engineering—the Delta Works, a massive dam and flood barrier that closed up the sea arms in response to the flood disaster of 1953. There are also exhibits documenting the 2,000-year history of the Dutch people's struggle with the sea. Films and slide shows, working scale models, and displays of materials give a comprehensive overview of dikes, dams, and underwater supports. The visit includes a boat trip in good weather. There is also a water playground with all kinds of interesting aquatic-based contraptions, a storm surge barrier one can stand on, a new futuristic-style whale pavilion, and even a hurricane simulator. Some attractions are closed in winter.
