English-Language Media in Amsterdam

English-Language Media

More Travel Tips »

The International Herald Tribune, an English-language newspaper with general world news, is available daily in the Netherlands from many newsagents, and the Financieele Dagblaad has a daily page devoted to English. Hip and happening, Shark, a low-budget fortnightly, is found in bars and clubs, with movie and music reviews, and its supplement, Queer Fish, lists gay and lesbian events. New on the scene is Amsterdam D-Voice, a free monthly newspaper featuring a few fun articles and mainly free classified ads. There's a free English-language newspaper, Amsterdam Weekly, that's available on Wednesdays at most city newsstands. Daily English-language newspapers are available at bigger newsstands, but they are quite expensive, running EUR 3-EUR 5. Sunday papers have never taken off, but larger railway stations and Sunday-opening bookstores have international Sunday papers.

Books

Most bookstores in Amsterdam carry English-language books, and even the average tobacconist stocks English-language magazines. Waterstone's Booksellers (Kalverstraat 152, just off Spui. 020/638-3821) carries a large assortment of books and magazines, with the emphasis on U.K. publishers. The American Book Center (Kalverstraat 185. 020/625-5537) has three floors of books and many magazines; they stock the largest selection of science fiction on the continent. For a literary selection, try The English Bookshop (Lauriergracht 71. 020/626-4230).
