Canal House Review

A collection of 17th-century merchants' houses meets 21st-century style in this boutique newcomer that mixes modern comforts (free Wi-Fi) with design elements that recall Dutch art and history, like the use of silks and velvets (a nod to the country's trading past). Opened in 2012 in Amsterdam's vibrant Jordaan neighborhood, the canal-side hotel features restored original features like timber beams, fireplaces, and decorated ceilings accent contemporary touches like leather headboards, locally-sourced mini-bars, and the knick-knack collections of recent owners. The 23 rooms are separated into four categories—Good, Better, Great, and Exceptional—and vary mainly based on size and view; the top category has double sinks, sitting areas, canal or garden vistas, and bespoke furniture. Though tall and narrow like traditional canal houses, these interconnected structures boast unique elements like a central, high-ceilinged Great Room (now the main lounge) and triple-width garden outfitted with seating areas and two garden houses. A hearty breakfast is included, and snacks and drinks are available throughout the day (there's no full-service restaurant.)
