CitizenM Review

Trendy travelers on a budget will enjoy the cosmopolitan vibe, lavish public spaces, and airy guest rooms with their high-tech gadgetry—but maybe not the sci-fi-like see-through glass tubes that contain the toilet and shower. Tucked away near the financial district in the south of Amsterdam, this link in an up-and-coming Dutch chain is popular with suited business types as well as a mixed array of young and older international guests who mingle informally at the chic cafeteria/bar and in the lounges broken down into living room–like compartments.

Design Within Reach
From Delftware to DJs, the Dutch are masters at delivering functionality with flair. CitizenM is no exception. Its boxy gray building on a residential street deftly belies the den of design within. Swiss furniture company Vitra rainbows the lobby with comfy-chic lounge chairs, whimsical wall décor, and an open-plan sushi and cocktail canteen. Congenial "ambassadors," as staff are known, hummingbird around, assisting with digital self check-in or foaming up a perfect cappuccino. The compact modular rooms evoke yacht cabins (apt since Google Earth shots of Amsterdam's canals carpet the corridors), with king-size beds, mood-lit shower and toilet booths, plus free movies on-demand. The hotel's public iMacs and free Wi-Fi please hip businesspeople and busy hipsters alike.
