Het Huis met de Hoofden (The House with the Heads)
Het Huis met de Hoofden (The House with the Heads) Review
The Greek deities of Apollo, Ceres, Mars, Minerva, Bacchus, and Diana welcome you—or rather busts of them do—to this magnificent example of Dutch Renaissance architecture, one of the three houses in Amsterdam with a side house, the forerunner of the double house. (The Bartolotti House, Herengracht 170–172 and De Dolfijn (The Dolphin), Singel 140–142 are the other spectacular examples.) This 1622 mansion is attributed to architect Pieter de Keyser, son of the more famed Hendrick. One story attached to the house relates to a maid and a crew of burglars: as they emerged from some hiding place, she chopped off their heads one by one and then (maybe) married the seventh. In 2007 the mansion was bought by Joseph R. Ritman, owner of a world-famous collection of spirituality literature, the Hermetic Philosophy Library (open to the public at Bloemstraat 13).
