This century-old market, found on Albert Cuypstraat between Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat, is the heart of The Pijp, and is arguably the best open-air market in Amsterdam. It's open Monday through Saturday from 9-5, rain or shine, and you're likely to hear the vendors barking out their bargain deals over the pleasant sound track of a street musician. Interspersed among the colorful crowd, stalls sell food, clothing, fabrics, plants, and household goods from all over the world. Just about every ethnic culture is represented here by purveyors, their goods, and their buyers. Be sure to try some of the exotic nibbles, or just order the Dutchman's favorite fast food—frites met mayonnaise (french fries with mayonnaise) served piping hot in a paper cone. Look for Belgian frites, as these are the tastiest.
