Amsterdam is often called the "Venice of the North," and five of its canals converge near the Apollo. A modernist palace framed by lovely trees, it's in the swank and suave Apollolaan district, known for its elegant shops and within easy walking distance of the Museum Quarter. Guest rooms are luxurious and modern, with nice touches like plasma televisions. Downstairs, the tangerine and terra-cotta-hued La Sirene offers a French-Mediterranean menu. Few can resist feasting on fish on the restaurant's beautiful canal-side terraces (higher-priced rooms also offer great views of the canals). As un touche finale, the hotel even has its own private marina. Pros: quiet location, refurbished rooms. Cons: slightly out-of-the-way location, overburdened staff.
