Though thousands of buildings in Amsterdam are designated historic monuments, few have their interiors landmarked as well. This one is, and for good reason: it's an Art Deco extravaganza of arched ceilings, stained glass, leaded-glass lamps, wall paintings, and a huge antique reading table. (Mata Hari had her wedding reception here.) Though the food is less notable than the décor (the menu offers everything from light snacks to full dinners), the coffee and cakes
are always good, so this could be a perfect place for an afternoon tea.

My sister and I went to Cafe Americain for our first lunch in Amsterdam and we hated it! The service is horrendous! We waited forever to get a waiter's attention to get a menue, waited another eternity to place our order, and after waiting 45 minutes and many requests of our waiter, the food never showed up. The waiter said it would take another 10 minutes. We left after drinking only sparkling water. Please avoid this restaurant!
