A lot of love has gone into the refurbishment of this 1640 canal-house hotel. It's a beautiful old home with high plaster ceilings, antique furniture, old paintings, and a backyard garden bursting with plants and flowers. Every room is unique in size and furnishings, but you can probably count on a grandmotherly quilt on the bed. The elegant chandeliered breakfast room with burled-wood grand piano overlooks the garden, and there is a small bar in the front parlor. Wandering the halls is a treat. Pros: beautiful breakfast room with grand piano, abundance of curios. Cons: worn rooms, narrow corridors are easy to get lost in.

My wife and I stayed at the Het Canal House in 1987. We had such a wonderful experience that we returned in 1999 with our oldest daughter. In both visits, the room was clean and comfortable, the breakfasts delicious, the garden view wonderful, and the decor charming. If we return to Amsterdam in the future, we will certain consider a third stay!
