This is the last of the city's floating markets. In days gone by, merchants would sail up the Amstel loaded down with blooms from the great tulip fields to delight patroons and housewives. Today, the flower sellers stay put, but their wares are still offered on stalls-cum-boats.

If you do only one thing in Amsterdam, I suggest you go to this market! It is beautiful and full of suvenior shops. It is also very central so you can get here from mostly anywhere with ease. The only con is that you can not buy mostly all the flowers and bulbs for suvieners(if you live in the USA that is) but most of the shops have an area which has approved bulbs to bring home.
