This landmark was designed by Willem Kromhout in 1902. He grafted Neo-Gothic turrets, Jugendstil gables, Art Deco windows, and a charmingly freestyle clock tower onto a proto-Amsterdam School structure. Its famed Art Deco-style Café Americain, where Mata Hari held her wedding reception, went from bohemian to being boycotted when it banned hippies in the '60s. It's the perfect place for a spot of tea.
