Started in 1757 by Kromhout, a ship's carpenter whose name literally means bent wood, this is one of Amsterdam's oldest functioning shipyards. Almost 300 ships were built here during its heyday in the late 19th century. By the early 20th century, 't Kromhout produced diesel engines used by Dutch canal boats, and to this day, old boats are restored here, so expect to shuffle your way through wood shavings and inhale the smells of tar, diesel, and varnish. The mechanics tend to get particularly excited by the historical collection of 22 antique engines and will tell you all about it if you give them a chance.
