This subcanal-level eatery with its peaceful dining room offers a savvy and stylish balancing of Mediterranean tastes. Though the menu is in continual flux, it may include cuttlefish, prawn, and crayfish with couscous, or a veal pastrami with lettuce and bacon, or a vegetarian pot au feu. You can also opt for one of three set menus: €29.50 for the pre-theater surprise menu between 5:30 and 7 pm; €35 for three courses; and €49.50 for the four-course Saturday "wine
menu," where you bring your own bottle or purchase glasses of wine from a great wine list.

When Van de Kaart first opened, it took us forever (monhts?) to get a reservation. But it was not in vain. We have found the experience to be quite satisfying, the food creative, the atmosphere in the small restaurant pleasant and the service better than average (but we continue to hope that the Netherlands eventually understands what true "good service" is!). We've returned to Van de Kaart several times (reservations are easier now to get) and it
continues to please.
