Set in a spiffy brick seven-story building, and topped with a jaunty two-story mansard roof, the Citadel is on a busy main street near the Royal Palace, Dam Square, and the Magna Plaza shopping mall. Rooms at the back of the building are quieter, but top-floor rooms at the front provide a sweeping view of gabled rooftops. All are furnished no-frills style, with modern wood furniture and patterned upholstery. Pros: lovely building, a stone's throw from sights like the Anne Frank House. Cons: rooms devoid of charm, no particular Dutch flavor.
