Slightly off the beaten track, this sprawling bar-café-lounge-restaurant is in Section South of the still-new-looking 1928 Olympic Stadium, an architectural monument designed by one of the founders of De Stijl, Jan Wils. With its contemporary take on the functionally modern, Vakzuid fits right in. There's a huge, sunny patio (accessible by water taxi) with comfortable seating under umbrellas; a solo-friendly bar specializing in coffee and designer sandwiches by day and cocktails and sushi by night; a comfortable lounge area with a view over the track field; and a raised restaurant with an open kitchen serving a mix of Mediterranean and Asian cooking. Thursday through Saturday evenings see this spot transform into something resembling a nightclub, complete with noise, smoke, bouncers, and DJs. Reservations are essential for the restaurant.
