Hotel Amsterdam--De Roode Leeuw

Fodor's Review:

On the corner of Dam Square and across from the city's leading department store, De Bijenkorf, the Hotel is a cut above the rest of the competition on the Damrak. The front guest rooms, showcasing the elegant 18th-century facade, have soundproof window that serve as a buffer to the outside world. The rooms at the back or on the "executive floor" are also safe bets. The hotel's restaurant, De Roode Leeuw, has built up a sizable following thanks to its heated terrace, Dutch haute cuisine, and encyclopedic champagne list. It was the recipient of the coveted Neerlands Dis (Netherlands' Dish) award, and serves a succulent roast Gelderland chicken in tarragon sauce, as well as an array of stampots (hotchpotches) made with smoked sausage, beef steak, and bacon. Pros: easy access to transportation, central location, excellent restaurant. Cons: small lobby, lackluster room decor.
