On a street of extraordinary 19th-century houses, the Hestia is parallel to the Vondelpark and close to the Leidseplein. Fitted out with red brick, white trim, and a cute mansard roof, it's certainly easy on the eyes. The Hestia is family operated, with a helpful and courteous staff, and is the kind of place that reinforces the image of the Dutch as a clean and orderly people. The hotel's breakfast room has a view of the garden, and a large family room has a charming sitting area in a bay window with stained glass that also overlooks the garden. The rooms are basic, light, and simply modern. Four of the rooms are very small, but so is their cost. Pros: friendly staff, close to museums. Cons: some rooms are on the small side, rooms book up fast.
