Classically proportioned, mansard-roofed, and ivy-covered—what more do you want from an Amsterdam hotel facade? This elegant, exceptionally spacious hotel was once the private residence of Freddy Heineken, of brewery fame. Formerly decorated in a classical style, the entire hotel is now fresh, modern, and airy, so if you want Vermeer-style interiors, this isn't the place for you. But the new design is energizing, not to say empowering (lots of businesspeople stay here): the breakfast room is bright and welcoming, the bar-lounge is sleek contempo, the guest rooms are modern and tranquil. As formal but not as expensive as the deluxe hotels, and embraced by a serene residential neighborhood, the Memphis is near the Concertgebouw. Extra beds are available, and children under 12 are welcome at no additional charge. The large bar has comfortable armchairs and tables and serves light meals. Pros: pleasant modern lobby and bar area, lovely rooms, equally suited to business and leisure travelers. Cons: rooms on the small size, location is a bit far from the sites.
