Popularity with rock musicians—of both the punk (Sex Pistols) and country (Emmylou Harris) persuasions—is announced by a gold record displayed in the lobby, one of many delightful personal touches here. Others include a teapot collection, Delft-blue tiles, and fresh flowers everywhere. A maze of hallways through the three buildings leads to guest rooms of wildly varying sizes; these are plainly decorated but enlivened by quilted bedspreads, floral drapes, and in some,
bedside tables covered by rugs (an old Dutch tradition). It's worth the extra money to get a room with views over the canal.
