Because it is close to the University of Amsterdam, Hortus Botanicus, and Tropenmuseum, the Hotel Rembrandt is often populated with academics and museum people – which explains the library of 1,800 books. The rarified air is particularly thick in the remarkable breakfast room: the 18th-century paintings and exquisitely painted woodwork on the ceiling, and the wood paneling and beams dating from 1558, were brought here in the 19th century. Most of the rooms at the back of the hotel facing the garden are quiet, though there are now double-glazed windows in front. Pros: great atmosphere, near museums. Cons: no real public areas, rooms at the front can be noisy.
