Fodor's Expert Review The Albus

Vijzelstraat 49, Amsterdam, North Holland, 1017 HE, Netherlands

Behind a re-creation of a vintage Amsterdam exterior are seven floors of rooms with all the mod cons and hip, recently refurbished hallways with brightly colored contemporary art. Small windows and a color scheme heavy on brown, black, and purple mean that many rooms feel dark. Still, even though the decor won’t be to everyone’s taste, at least they’ve tried to veer away from the usual safe corporate blandness. On the plus side, the beds are super comfy, with great cushions and Egyptian cotton bed linens.

PROS

  • claims to be “the first hotel in Europe that’s completely CO2 free”
  • recently renovated bathrooms are well designed, with a fresh, contemporary feel
  • all rooms are equipped with Nespresso machines

CONS

  • smallish, darkish rooms
  • on a busy, unattractive street
  • only the three suites come with a bath
