Prinsen

Vondelstraat 36-38, Amsterdam, North Holland, 1054GE, Netherlands

The storybook charm of the 1870 exterior—dormers, bay windows, jigsaw trim, Neoclassical columns, and sculpted reliefs of cats—ends as soon as you step into the cheerful but banally renovated interior. Many of the bedrooms are light and airy, though, and a bright yellow breakfast room overlooks a lovely garden. This landmark was designed by P.H.H. Cuijpers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum and Centraal Station; take time to look for the relief of the cat chasing mice.
