Why We Like It

It’s affordable and central, with helpful and friendly staff.

Fodor's Expert Review

The 19th-century building near the Anne Frank House is an architectural extravaganza with Art Nouveau portals and redbrick trimmings, but inside, it’s more of a '70s show (and not in a hip retro way). Service is friendly and helpful; staff are eager to offer recommendations for restaurants and attractions in the bustling adjacent neighborhood.

You Should Know Prepare to climb lots of steep stairs to reach any of the rooms. We repeat: very steep, twisty stairs. Lots of them. The staff will help you with your baggage, however.

Room

Affordable yet very small rooms are terribly dated: think wood paneling, chintzy bedspreads, Moroccan lamps, creaky beds and red carpets. On the positive side, some have great canal views, and there’s free Wi-Fi and loads of shelf space.

Tip Sleepers bothered by noise should opt for rooms in the rear.

Bathroom

The pink and off-white private bathrooms are dated, cramped, and some have cracked tiles and threadbare towels.

Lobby

Up a steep flight of stairs (did we mention the stairs?), you’ll find the chintzy red reception area, where you’ll be welcomed with a drink.

Dining

A basic breakfast (included) is served in a small breakfast area.
