Fodor's Review:

Getting here requires going west of the Jordaan, and beyond the Westergasfabriek cultural complex. Like that neighbor (which began its days as a gas factory), this spot is an industrial monument -- for a century, this plant pumped water from coastal dunes. Now, under a sky-high ceiling, one can dine on honestly rendered French and Dutch dishes -- from rib-eye béarnaise and steak tartare to wonderful fish dishes like grilled tuna with ratatouille -- in a bustling atmosphere favored by families and larger groups. If it's too noisy for you, seek refuge on the peaceful terrace.

Live it up in Cafe Amsterdam

Posted by Kevin from York England on 5/26/06

A great place to have a meal with friends this Cafe is far more than the name says. The room is massive and the tables that are outside next to the canal are great if you can get one. It is very much a locals meeting place and like all restaurants locals in it means it is good. Good european based fair with some great Dutch dishes. I particulaly enjoye dthe Dutch shrimps .. yummy. A good meal and a few glasses of wine with some good company makes for a great night out here. Not to expensive good service with a smile and of course, after all this is the capital of the Netherlands, staff are multilingual.
