The Moselle Valley: Places to Explore
Mondorf-les-Bains
Sitting near the French and German borders, this quaint spa town attracts visitors from hundreds of miles away for its natural spring waters, reputed for centuries to cure whatever ails you. Mondorf's popularity reached its peak at the turn of the 20th century, when it was a premiere destination for Europe's upper classes, with no less than 10 grand hotels catering to their every whim and fancy. At the end of World War II, Mondorf was in the news as a prison camp for high-ranking Nazi party members on their way to the Nuremburg trials. The town then became a more modest draw, catering primarily to Luxembourg's retirees, but in 1988 higher times returned with the opening of Mondorf le Club, an upscale spa and health center. Now the town once again attracts an international crowd of all ages.
