In addition to larger cruise ships, ferries connect Rīga with Kiel and Lübeck (in Germany) and Stockholm (in Sweden).
The cruise port is in the main port, close to the historic downtown core. The walk from port to the downtown core is 15 minutes along the waterfront. The passenger welcome center has good facilities, including restaurants, restrooms, currency exchange facilities, and ATMs.
To reach the Old Town you can take an inexpensive shuttle transfer or taxi. Taxis are more expensive from the port than within the city center. Drivers must display an operating license and a meter. Stick to the state cabs with orange and black markings. Insist that the meter be turned on; if there is no meter, choose another taxi or decide on a price beforehand. Public transportation can be paid for by the ride, or you can get a 24-hour pass. Services run from 5:30 am to midnight. Some routes have 24-hour service. Trams 6 and 11 connect the Old Town with the Esplanāde area and run regularly throughout the day. Buy tickets at numerous outlets and validate them in the machine on board.
