San Giorgio Maggiore and the Giudecca

San Giorgio Maggiore and the Giudecca

The Giudecca, a forlorn neighborhood that became Venice's industrial center in the 19th century, now holds the art deco remains of a gigantic flour mill, the Molino Stucky, and of the Dreher beer factory. The accommodation options are few: you can sleep in a $1,300 suite at the Cipriani Hotel, or spend 20 bucks for a bed in Venice's largest hostel. Bars are almost as scarce as in the east side of Castello, but some make the trip just to visit Harry's Dolci, the closest you can get in Venice to a Viennese café. On the third weekend in July, the island celebrates the Festa del Redentore with the building of a pontoon across the Canale della Giudecca to facilitate the pilgrimage to Palladio's Chiesa del Redentore.
