Why We Like It

Though it’s a bit simple and rustic, Locanda Cipriani has tons of history and a peaceful setting—and if you’ve already “done” Venice, staying out on an island can be a totally different experience. Plus being able to eat dinner in the famous restaurant without having to sail back to Venice is a super-relaxing way to do it.

Fodor's Expert Review

On the peaceful island of Torcello in Venice’s northern lagoon, this simply furnished six-room inn, which opened in 1935, is known for its restaurant and the many literary and cultural celebrities who have visited over the years (for instance, Ernest Hemingway stayed here while writing his book “Across the River and Through the Trees”). To truly get away from it all, but still sail to Venice or the other lagoon islands when the mood strikes, this could be your place.

You Should Know It’s pretty quiet on the island, so if you’d rather be amongst the hustle and bustle, you’re better off staying in Venice proper.

The cozy lounge-bar has a rustic fireplace where guests can hang out, or they can relax with a walk in the lovely gardens.

Locanda Cipriani’s namesake restaurant, run by the same family who owns Venice’s Harry Bar, is world-famous for both its setting and its traditional Venetian cuisine. Diners can eat either outside in the pretty gardens or inside with terracotta brick walls and beamed ceilings.

Tip Don’t miss the restaurant’s signature Sampietro ‘alla Carlina’—John Dory fish and scampi with butter and capers.
