Fodor's Review

Re-opened in 2013 after an extensive renovation, the Gritti Palace represents aristocratic Venetian living at its best, complete with hand-blown chandeliers, sumptuous textiles, and sweeping canal views. The grande dame's history goes back to 1525, when it was built as the private residence of the prominent Gritti family; later, it housed a roster of nobles and notables, including Vatican ambassadors. The Palace was turned into a hotel in the early-19th century and though

extensive renovations have been done over the centuries, guests still appreciate original architectural details like wooden ceilings and patterned flooring in the common areas, and—depending on the room category—flourishes like 18th-century Murano wall lamps, silk damask Rubelli fabrics, and traditional Venetian stucco. The twelve categories of accommodations range from Deluxe Room (typically smaller, with views over a side canal) to suites named after Venetian neighborhoods, historic events, or famous past guests. If you enjoy Chef Daniele Turco's locally influenced menus at one of the Grand Canal-view restaurants, you can tour the Rialto Market and take a private cooking class with the master himself. The treatments at the Acqua di Parma Spa incorporate the Italian-made line's aromatic scents, each named after a different region of the country.
