Why We Like It

We really feel like we’re in Venice here—the Venice of palazzos, artwork, and doges—and staying at Ca’Sagredo is like spending the night in an art museum. How many times in your life can you do that? Though not as central as some Venice hotels, it’s still on the Grand Canal, and it couldn’t be easier to hop a boat to wherever you need to go. Though the best rooms are a splurge, it’s one you won’t soon forget.

Fodor's Expert Review

A bastion of Old World elegance in the peaceful Cannaregio neighborhood, Ca’Sagredo is housed in a (what else?) 15th-century palace. It showcases some of the best-preserved interiors in Venice, with amazing art-lined walls and frescos from famous Venetian painters. Plus it’s away from the crowds of San Marco, though the Rialto Market is just across the canal.

You Should Know The hotel tends to attract an older crowd looking for quiet, so if you’re after a lively atmosphere, this is not your place.

Room

The most basic rooms are understated, with beige carpets and striped fabric accents, while the most deluxe have painted or carved ceilings. All are filled with antiques (as well as very good reproductions), while some have balconies facing the Grand Canal.

Tip For the most Venetian atmosphere, and to sleep amongst real art treasures, splurge on one of the Heritage or Grand Canal Suites.

Bathroom

Marble-clad bathrooms come in varying sizes, and have modern conveniences like rain showers; some include bathtubs and double sinks.

Lobby

Spacious, with beamed ceilings, marble columns, and Persian carpets, the entrance is grand but there aren’t many places to sit—though you’ll likely be out and about in Venice anyway.

Tip The real treasures here are found in the public spaces outside the lobby: the music ballroom has gorgeous frescoed walls and ceilings, while Portigo Hall has lovely beamed ceilings and lavish furnishings. The beautiful marble staircase, replete with carved cherubs, is also worth a gander.

Gym

Extremely basic, and not always open, so don’t count on being able to use it while you’re here.

Dining

Traditional Venetian dishes (though with mixed reviews) are served for lunch and dinner at L’Alcova Restaurant, complete with lovely views on to the Grand Canal.

Drinking

The small but lovely rooftop terrace serves up aperitivo (Aperol Spritz, Bellinis, and the like, with tasty snacks) when the weather’s fine, while the indoor Bar L’Incontro is open year-round, afternoon to late evening.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You can hop a number of boats right outside the hotel: the traghetto at the Santa Sofia stop will take you directly across the canal to the Rialto, while a ferry from the Ca’ d’Oro vaporetto stop will drop you off in San Marco, amongst other locations. Plus, of course, you can walk everywhere; San Marco is about 15 minutes away.

Restaurants

Reserve in advance for a great selection of traditional dishes—especially the seafood—at Osteria La Bottega ai Promessi Sposi (2-minute walk). Charming family-run Vini da Gigio (3-minute walk) offers tasty pastas and seasonal dishes with a great wine list, while cozy Osteria Ca’ d’Oro alla Vedova (2-minute walk) is known for its polpette (fried meatballs) and local vino.

Bars

El Sbarlefo Cannaregio (3-minute walk) offers delicious cicchetti like the classic sarde in saor (sweet and sour sardines), plus a good choice of wines and cocktails, while petite wine bar Un Mondo di Vino (5-minute walk) is a great place to enjoy aperitivi (wine or spritz and bar snacks).
