This is a classic spot to soak up some of the atmosphere in Venice's Lido district. Thomas Mann wrote his haunting novella Death in Venice here, and it appeared in the book's film adaptation. The art deco tone has survived pretty much intact, making this a favorite stopover for the beautiful people during the Biennale. Rooms are sumptuously furnished, overlooking either the garden or the sea, and the facilities, including the beach, are superb. A minibus links the hotel with the nearby Excelsior, from which shuttle boats cross to San Marco every 30 minutes.
