Why We Like It

The private gardens, the water views, and a convenient location—Pensione Accademia Villa Maravege has it all, and wraps it up in a charming small package that’s hard to resist.

Fodor's Expert Review

If you prefer staying in smaller places with character, the Pensione Accademia, set inside a 17th-century building in Dorsoduro, offers quiet accommodations just off the Grand Canal and close to the Ponte dell’Accademia (Accademia Bridge). Best of all, this inn has two gardens—one in front and one in back—perfect for having breakfast or a drink or simply relaxing after a hard day of sightseeing.

Tip Take advantage of the Pensione’s free private water taxis to the island of Murano.

Room

Each of the 27 rooms is different, though all feature antique reproductions and mosaic or tile floors and some have beamed or vaulted ceilings. Most have views of either a side canal (the Rio di San Trovaso) or the rear garden.

You Should Know None of the guest rooms have Grand Canal views.

Bathroom

Tiled bathrooms can be on the small side. They come with either shower or a combo tub/shower, so ask when you book if a tub’s important to you.

Lobby

The long and narrow lobby, with mosaic floors and beamed ceilings, has a few places to sit, but you’d do better to go hang in one of the charming gardens if the weather’s nice.

Dining

Pensione Accademia doesn’t have its own restaurant, but a buffet breakfast is included with all rates, and guests can take it either in the breakfast room or outside on the front patio.

Drinking

In a welcome touch, guests are offered a complimentary drink and snacks either at the small inside bar or outside in the back garden.
