Metropole

Fodor's Review:

Eccentrics, eclectics, and fans of Antonio Vivaldi (who taught music here) love the Metropole, a labyrinth of intimate, opulent spaces featuring exotic Eastern influences and jammed with cabinets displaying collections of ivory-adorned cigarette cases, antique corkscrews, beaded bags, and more. The owner, a lifelong collector of odd objects, fills common areas and the sumptuously appointed guest rooms with endless antiques. The best rooms are up on the roof, where there are also two spacious rooftop terraces. Only six of the standard double rooms offer lagoon views. Suites feature sparkling mosaic sunken baths, Fortuny fabrics, and other notable architectural details that commingle to create a unique atmosphere highlighting colorful aspects of Venice's exotic past. Pro: Owner has exquisite taste and collections. Con: The Riva is one of the most densely touristy spots in the city.
