Formerly the residence of the Contarini family, one of Venice's most powerful families, this late-14th-century palace has been a hotel since 2001. The building's aristocratic past shows in the elegant inner courtyard with a majestic marble staircase. All uniquely furnished, the spacious, light-filled rooms have high wood-beam ceilings and Venetian terrazzo or wood flooring; apartments have kitchens, dining rooms, and open mezzanines. The large Torcello Suite also has a wooden roof terrace from which you can take in a spectacular view of the city. In sunny weather breakfast is served in the small garden. Private dinners, meetings, and small conferences are sometimes held in a large, well-appointed hall overlooking the garden. Pros: Spacious, residential neighborhood, good for longer stays. Con: May be a bit remote for some.
